The great and the good of the wine trade (and yours truly) recently descended upon the little Suffolk seaside town of Southwold for yet another epic blind tasting.
This year was the turn of the 2008s. Initially tasted in the spring of 2009 in the wake of Lehman Brothers’ collapse and the first credit crunch, some merchants boycotted the tastings altogether. J&B made the annual pilgrimage, and with certain caveats, we liked what we saw. It was evident that the estates with the best terroir and the deepest pockets fared best. Some lesser properties displayed green notes - not unsurprising given the cool growing season.
Angelus released before Easter and the First Growths released soon after at very attractive prices. This gave the campaign some impetus, but it was when Robert Parker raved about the wines that the campaign really took off. In retrospect, Big Bob was a little over zealous; the two subsequent vintages, which can both stake claims to being potential vintages of the century, rather overshadowed the 2008s, so the downgrades came as no surprise.
Over the three days we tasted over 250 wines by commune. I am not permitted to disclose average or other individual’s scores, but I can disclose by own thoughts, so what follows is my personal view from the tasting and is not necessarily the consensus of the group. 2008 is a very mixed bag. There are many highlights, particularly in the northern Medoc and Pomerol. Wines that showed extremely well for me included: Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, Calon Segur, Lafite, Mouton, Lynch Bages, Pontet Canet, Pichon Lalande, Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Poyferre, Langoa and Leoville Barton, Ducru Beaucaillou, Gruaud Larose, Lagrange, Palmer, Margaux, Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion, Carmes Haut Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, Malartic Lagraviere, Le Pin, Petrus, Eglise Clinet, VCC, Evangile, Providence, La Fleur Petrus, Hosanna, Cheval Blanc and Tertre Roteboeuf. Particular mention should go to Angelus and Pichon Baron, both were real over-performers.
As to the character of the wines, there were a few changes and themes. I noticed a sweeter character to the fruit in the flights of St Estephes and St Juliens, however, this was not evident in the Pauillac flights. I have no evidence, but estates are permitted to add up to 15% of the final blend from other vintages and there was a decidedly 2009 style to some of these... They will no doubt give much early drinking pleasure. The top wines from the Medoc are more structured than I remember. This could be a result of press wine added to the blend. Tannins are ripe, but they are big and solid and acidities are high. This should bode well for long keeping, but one required a bit of stamina to taste through some of these flights (maybe I’ve just gone soft after the 2009s and 2010s...).
After the palate-pounding two days, we tasted a couple of flights of Sauternes to finish. The first flight of less well known estates didn’t really do much for me. The final flight including the likes of Yquem, Climens and de Fargues was considerably more interesting. It was a tiny crop, I believe yields were as low as 3hl/ha and most of the fruit came from the first two picks as latter tries encountered problems with frost. Yquem, Suduiraut and Guiraud topped my list; all displayed ample sweetness, lovely precision, pure flavours and great balance. It is a somewhat overlooked Sauternes vintage, but don’t dismiss the 2008s, these are charming wines.

Reading between the lines...
Posted by Tom Jenkins, Bordeaux Buyer
So, Big Bob’s scores are out. 2010, as we all expected has been hailed as another exceptional vintage by the world’s most influential wine critic. There are plenty of potential hundred pointers to get consumers very excited, but as virtually no wines have been released we will focus on the reassessment of the 2008s.Parker’s initial appraisal breathed life into a subdued market, battered by financial uncertainty and seemingly disinterested with Bordeaux 2008. The campaign was going nowhere until issue 182 of the Wine Advocate started landing on peoples’ doorsteps. High scores and high praise for the wines turned the campaign around and many customers bagged themselves a bargain. Unfortunately, Mr P wasn’t aware of what was to come (in 2009 and 2010).
So with hindsight we can say that he over egged the `08s a little, and as such most scores have been re-evaluated to the lower end of their initial range. Some have been downgraded a little further still, but those who read the notes will see that he is still a huge fan of these wines. The headline grabbers are Lafite and Ausone, both with 98/100. Praise and high points are heaped particularly on the wines from Pomerol and Graves and there are many 90+ point wines that won’t break the bank including the exceptional Chateau Poujeaux.

Xu Lei unveiled as the latest Mouton Rothschild artist
Posted by Tom Jenkins, Bordeaux Buyer
The speculation is over; Mouton 2008 will indeed wear a label painted by a Chinese artist. He’s not exactly a household name, but Xu Lei’s profile is sure to rise amongst wine lovers if no-one else. According to the Chateau's press release, 'Xu Lei's ram asserts the role of a great wine as a link between people and cultures, from one hemisphere to the other of "planet wine"’. Presumably the eastern and western hemispheres...Conjecture over the nationality of the latest Mouton artist started at the end of 2009 and the price has been rising steadily since. After the announcement, the 2008 has traded at £7800 per case on Liv-ex, some way behind the Lafite 2008 (£13,643/cs), but nevertheless, an enormous increase on its release price (£1750/cs).

Bordeaux UGC - The 2008s
Posted by Tom Jenkins, Bordeaux BuyerBack to the 2008s. When we first tasted these in April 2009, the economic outlook was bleak to say the least. The metrological reports suggested a summer that had been even less glorious than 2007, so, it was fair to say that the prospect of tasting and selling the 2008s was not something we were particularly looking forward to. However, we made the trip and we were pleasantly surprised by many of the results.
Despite the cool August, the best wines had a real concentration, coupled with really precise flavours and good acidities. Not `Classic` meaning bad, but `Classic` meaning good, to steal a phrase from RUN DMC. The economic outlook remained gloomy, so Chateaux such as Angelus, and the 1st growths made the bold decision to release first and at very attractive prices. The market place tentatively bought the top ten or so wines, but it wasn’t until Robert Parker waxed lyrical about the 2008s, that merchants and customers started to by a wider range of Chateaux. The rest as they say is history.
So, how are the wines showing now that they are in bottle? This is not a consistent vintage; we were very picky and we advise customers to be cautious with their purchases too. Yes the best wines are fabulous, but there are some stinkers too. The big question is, has Parker stuck his neck out too far on this one? Many wines achieve similar or better scores in 2008 than they achieved in 2005. 2008 is no 2005, but there are some fine wines. On the basis of today’s tasting, Pontet Canet, Lynch Bages, Pichon Baron, Leoville Poyferre, Beychevelle, Conseillante, Haut Bailly, Domaine de Chevalier, Rauzan Segla and Leoville Barton are all very smart wines and will offer collectors much enjoyment. The biggest surprise is the improvement of the Margaux commune. We were very disappointed by our initial tastings, but many of these wines have improved in barrel. Despite the weakness of sterling, many of these offer very good value (particularly when compared the magical 2009s). Other than the wines mentioned above, there were particularly strong showings from Ormes de Pez, Lafon Rochet and Poujeaux. The dry whites are crisp and classic, whilst the unsung sweeties are delightfully crisp with beautifully precise flavours. There is enough botrytis present, but these are not blockbusters. Guiraud and de Fargues were the richest offerings on show, whilst Climens was the most complete.
All in all, there are some jolly good wines from 2008, and the fact that this is not a 2005 or a 2009 is reflected in the prices. If you pick carefully, 2008 offers some of the best value buys on the market today.

Second Tranche Ausone & Margaux
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
The first tranche of Chateau Ausone literally leaped out of the doors of our St James's Street office. Hardly a surprise given the potentially perfect score from Robert Parker and the impeccable reputation of this estate, forged by perfectionist proprietor Alain Valthier. Yields were down substantially, so we could only offer the first tranche to those who had purchased the 2007. Since the demand has been sky high, we have been busy sourcing more stock, and are delighted to offer a very limited quantity at the second tranche price of £7500.
We could eulogise for hours about the intensity and complexity of Alain's wines, but we simply wouldn't do them justice. They possess an ethereal quality that is hard to put into words. Ausone has for some time now been right at the very pinnacle of the Bordeaux trade. Unchallenged as the outstanding wine from St Emilion, it also vies for the title of the best wine in Bordeaux, even the world. The 2008 is no exception; quite simply, it is breathtaking.
We have also procured a few more cases of Margaux, also at their second tranche price. This appears to be another wine in high demand. A tiny quantity of the 2008 has been released on to the market, so we were relieved and elated to be offered a few more cases.

Lafite Rothschild second tranche
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer| Lafite Rothschild has released a tiny second tranche to the market. This fabulous 98-100 point wine was our joint wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Ausone. The second tranche is a full £600 more than our initial release at £3350, but for one of the greatest modern day Lafites, maybe it's worth it... |

The end is nigh (or neigh)
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
It has been a busy day in Bordeaux and there are now just a handful of releases to come. The last big name from the Medoc, Leoville Las Cases has shocked us all with a very fair price, £895. This wine is clearly of first growth quality and the team unanimously loved it. At under half the price of the First Growths, this is a definite `buy`.
Bringing up the rear is Cheval Blanc. Admittedly, this has been released at a significant discount to the 2007, but it is still stupendously expensive at £3350. It is a magical wine, but at quite a price. The Petit Cheval is a very fine example and at £575 certainly offers those who love this estate a better value option.

The Moueix family's latest baby...
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
We are delighted to announce the birth of a new star in St Emilion. JP Moueix acquired the Chateau formally known as Belair in 2008. This property was once one of the most sought after wines in Bordeaux and rivalled the first growths as the most expensive wine from the region. However, many years of mediocre wine-making has ruined their once great reputation. This fabled terroir, next to Ausone on the upper slopes of the limestone terrace to the south of St Emilion can and will again produce superb wines. The 2008 is definitely a great effort. A huge amount of endeavour has gone into this wine. Several tries and miniscule yields have resulted in the finest Belair (-Monange) in decades. Congratulations to the Moueix team for their outstanding 2008 and we look forward to many more great wines from this estate.
`The 2008 is clearly a product of fully ripened fruit and physiologically mature tannins, something the previous administration rarely sought, too frequently harvesting under-ripe fruit with green, astringent tannins. The results were always predictable - reprehensible wines from an extraordinary terroir. That has all changed under Christian and Edouard Moueix's guidance. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2008 reveals an extraordinary aromatic display of crushed rocks, spring flowers, and abundant kirsch and black raspberry fruit. The wine possesses good acids, unreal minerality, and superb intensity, texture, and length. The harvest was extremely late, between October 14-21, and after the selections were done, the final yield came to 12 hectoliters per hectare - commercial madness. The result is an amazing effort that should evolve for 30 years. Formerly known as Chateau Belair, 2008 is the first vintage in which Christian Moueix, his son, Edouard, and new oenologist, Eric Murisasco, had 100% control at Belair-Monange, and they have admirably demonstrated just what this great terroir is capable of producing. Cropped at an unreal 18 hectoliters per hectare, it appears ready to compete with its near-by neighbor, Ausone`. 93-95+ points. - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, Issue 182
Due to the small production and high demand, Belair-Monange will be allocated. Please express your interest to your account manager.

1st releases of the 3 day week
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
Since the sale of sister property, Yquem, to LVMH, de Fargues has been the sole jewel in the Luc Saluces crown. This is clearly one of the most successful Sauternes of the vintage, receiving 94-96 points from the Neil Martin, but at £815 per case, perhaps Climens and Rieussec look better buys.
This new week brings the release of yet another massive, full-throttle St Emilion, Clos de Sarpe. With a huge 93-96+ from Robert Parker, this micro cuvee (just 500 cases have been produced) will require considerable patience…

White out...
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
The news today is no news. All is quiet on the Place, so we have taken the opportunity to offer the great white wines from Haut Brion, Laville Haut Brion, Pape Clement, Margaux and Domaine de Chevalier. The 2008s are not as fat and rich as the 2007s, but they are classically mineral and possess the brightness and charm one expects from great Bordeaux sec. We thought that they were delicious, thrilling wines, but sadly they have been made in tiny quantities.

Mouton second tranche
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer| We are delighted to offer a small second tranche of Mouton Rothschild 2008. We have secured a small parcel and can offer these cases at either £1825 per case untied, or £1750 (the first tranche price) linked to either Clerc Milon (£265) or d`Armailhac (£235). These sister properties are really on top of their games. The Mouton wine-making team have made great strides and the quality of these wines has really been lifted. Please hurry to avoid disappointment. |

Hedonistic St Julien…
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
The big news this morning is the release of one of the shinning lights of St Julien, Ducru Beaucaillou. Bruno Borie's wonderful estate is producing fabulous wines. It has been their ambition to make a wine of first growth quality, and the 2008 certainly rivals the big five. This is a monumental Ducru, boasting enormous power, concentration and weight as well as offering complexity and finesse. Kudos to Bruno for producing one of the outstanding wines of the vintage and a worthy successor to his outstanding 2005.

More Margaux
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer
This morning sees the release of two spectacular Margaux properties, Lascombe and Malescot St Exupery. Lascombe is in a fine vein of form and has developed a large following in the far east. Malescot has also enjoyed a renaissance since the millennium. A string of successful wines has risen this property from almost obscurity to its position as one of the major players in the commune. Anyone looking for smart Margaux, should seriously consider both of these 2008s.

For lack of a better headline... `95-97 point` Montrose
Posted by Julian Campbell, Buyer| Jean Delmas, formally of Haut Brion has produced a splendid 2008. This is a really deep, brooding effort. It is classic and austere and will reward patience. A very fine Montrose and at £500 per case, this looks good value when compared to the likes of Palmer and older vintages of Montrose. |

Fashionable new releases…
Posted by Julian Campbell, BuyerThis morning we have several new releases, including two from the fashion giant Chanel. One might wonder what a Parisian fashion house and perfumer is doing producing Margaux and St Emilion. What we can tell you is that Rauzan Segla and Canon are much improved. The hard work and considerable investment are really paying dividends - these are two great efforts.
Next we have Alain Vauthier’s Moulin St George. The vineyards of this St Emilion property adjoin those of the great Chateau Ausone. Robert Parker has referred to this property as a `junior Ausone` in the past, and we believe it to be amongst the best value buys from St Emilion.
Jumping back to the other side of the Garonne, we have the release of Branaire Ducru. This fourth growth property is well situated across the road from Beychevelle - another consistent performer from the St Julien commune.
To complete the round up, we have the mighty impressive de Fieuzal. This Pessac property has wowed Mr Parker; a really long-term effort and stunning value for money…

Trophy wines…
Posted by Julian Campbell, BuyerToday we are delighted to release some of the highest scoring wines of the vintage. Haut Bailly and Troplong Mondot have matched Haut Brion and Cheval Blanc with 95-97 points from Mr Parker. When you consider that the 2005 Troplong is almost £2000 per case, this, ` worthy rival to the prodigious 2005!`, looks like a keen buy. Veronique Sanders continues to push quality ever higher at Haut Bailly. A great wine and a very fair price. Hurry while stocks last.
Finally, Pavie Macquin and Smith Haut Lafitte. Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt keep up their recent run of form. This could very well be in the same league as the monumental 2000 and 2003. Smith Haut Lafitte is making better wines than ever before. A wine with a big score to price ratio…
